Wireless Smorgasbord

Living on the Edge
Trade shows and conferences are fantastic opportunities for learning, as well as networking with others in the industry. Where else can you hang out with hundreds, even thousands, of other wireless enthusiasts? I've recently spoken with many readers (at conferences of course!) and all agreed that conferences are extremely valuable to their professional lives. In an increasingly competitive business world, it's survival of the fittest, and the more you know, the fitter you are. In surveys, we've discovered that many of our readers regularly attend i-technology conferences to stay on top of their game, but if you don't - worry not. Now's as good a time as any to start! And there just happens to be one coming up next year that you might want to mark on your calendar now.

Taking place in Santa Clara, California, May 7-9, 2002 (this is wireless time - we move fast, and early notice always helps), will be a wireless trade show of enormous proportions - Wireless Edge 2002. It's produced by SYS-CON Media, of course, publisher of the very magazine you're reading - as well as many other leading i-tech publications - and producer of the world's leading i-technology developer conferences.

The conference business is a crowded one, as is the wireless conference space, but what we're planning will be a cut above the rest. Daily updates on conference activities, schedules, and registration can all be found at               . www.sys-con.com/wirelessedge. Between now and then, there's a handful of other conferences worth checking out. If you're a wireless developer, there's a whole track devoted to J2ME at JDJEdge (www.javaedge2001.com) in New York this September.... Hope to see you there!

The Unwired Playground
The wireless space is vast...and every day it continues to grow. Not only is this great for the industry, it's a testament to the increasing demands from consumers and businesses alike for more wireless "stuff" ranging from phones to end-to-end solutions. In general, it means as an industry, the wireless space is doing quite well...and for us, as the premier magazine covering the industry, it means our job is getting bigger and bigger. Business is a bumpy ride, and as the wireless market matures it's bound to have some shakeouts. It's our job to guide you through this.

To help us cover the market, we've got a great tool on our Web site for you. If you haven't been there yet, you should stop reading this column and go to it right now. (Please come back when you're done.) If you have been there, then continue reading, and revisit the site later. At wbt2.com, our online portal, is the Wireless Buyer's Guide. With nearly 30 comprehensive categories ranging from Bluetooth Products to Consulting Services, to Base Stations, we've got a category for everything.... And if we've missed one, you can create it. Look forward to a print excerpt from the buyer's guide in a future issue. In the meantime check out the site....

Coming Next Month
Among our usual boatload of content, next month we'll unveil a new section in WBT. We'll be covering a smorgäsbord of wireless goods - including hardware, software, and wireless accessories in a new section tentatively titled "Thumbs Up." It's our current working title, but we're always searching for something better, so if you've got an idea, please drop me a line. In "Thumbs Up," we'll be reviewing the latest and greatest technology...technology that we feel outshines the rest...the products you need to have. From the perfect case for your cell phone to the latest gadgets to make your day run smoother, we'll cover it all. You can preview it today at www.wbt2.com. Just like the industry, things are moving fast here at WBT; in fact, someday I may have to run across the Golden Gate Bridge just to keep up.
